> The weapons contractors use their government influence and enormous financial base to secure tax-breaks (rampant in USA) and subsidies which is paid for by the public taxes.

2. Profiteering and government support for the arms industries:

> The world superpowers have realized the international arms trade to be the single most profitable activity which is apparently immune to economic downturns.

> In technologically advanced economies (for ex. USA) the military, the government and commerce have become greatly intertwined; meaning that the existence of a thriving defense industry is considered vital for national security.

> The total defense expenditure of the world now stands at in excess of one trillion US dollars and about thirty percent of the amount is attributed to arms trading revenue.

> Military aid (paid for by tax dollars) provided by US to developing countries often carry a condition that it can only be spend on weapon purchases from US arms manufacturers. This way public money is converted in to profits for corporations.

> The governments constantly keeps revising policies to up keep the profits earned by the arms industries under the pretext of preventing job losses associated with the weapons industry.

3. The weapons trade and the arms race:

> The emerging economies are seen as promising markets by large arms dealers as most developing countries do not have an established arms industry

> Developing countries which are fighting off regional conflicts and in need of military armament are provided by governments of superpowers through national arms dealers in exchange for various ‘support and services’.

>Third world nations that are tied in bitter rivalry (such as India and Pakistan) have been involved in a massive arms building campaign (made possible by the availability of a vast weapons market). Interestingly, both the rivals have been receiving arms through the same weapons corporations.

The middle section is where you make good the promises of your introduction. No matter how virtousic, well-written, and internally logical your opening paragraph is, in the middle section you have to deliver. As wit all areas of essay composition, there are things to do and things to don't, and once you know what these are you'll feel a lot happier. So read on...

I have divided 'The middle section' into two chapters. The first looks at structure, and shows you how to organize your thoughts into an intellectually mobile and energetic argument. I'm also going to talk in this chapter about how and when to use critics (even, or rather especially, when their views contradict your own). The second, on linkage, is concerned with movement within this larger structure, and explains how to progress smoothly between senences, paragraphs, and sections.

Let me begin by saying that a good essay has to have a good structure. Sorry to be prescriptive all of a sudden, but this rule affords no exceptions. If you dont think about structure, you will almost certainly end up with a sprawling, lurching, sporadic argument, that will neither convince nor persuade, and will almost likely exasperate your tutor to the point of distraction. Although most people donot realize it, but structural problems in the middle section start not with the article or the essay but with the question. People dive in without making absolutely sure they know precisely what it is they have been asked to do. They seize a few key terms and head off into what they think is the sunlight, but which frequently turns out to be the headlamps of an oncoming juggernaught.

Effective Articles - Writing the Introduction

At school or university, various tutors will no doubt have given you different or even conflicting instructions on how to negotiate this crucial stage in your essay, that is writing the introduction for an effective article. The introduction is all about setting out your stall - about letting your reader know what to expect, and telling him or her where you are coming from critically. One of the most important aspects of writing an effective introduction is internal coherency, one point should move smoothly and elegantly into the next and in a logical sequence. One way of accomplishing this is that when you come across pithy phrases or expressions in the work of good critics, don't be afraid to 'lift' them for your own use. The chances are that the phrase in question has already been adapted from someone else. Don't lift ideas though. That's plagiarism and you might goto prison for it.

A good first paragraph is all about striking the right note, or, to switch metaphors, giving your reader a firm handshake. After all, as the word suggests, an introduction introduces you to someone for the first time. Don't make your reader feel like he or she just squeezed an uncooked sausage. Remember, it pays to think carefully about your introduction, because from it your reader forms a first impression of you. And as Dickens reminds us in his novel: 'First impressions, you know, often go a long way, and last a long time.'

A thing or two about Clarity
We should not only be aiming for grammatical clarity and perspicuity in our articles, but also for visual perspicuity. An article is a physical object, and the reader cannot help but be influenced by its appearance. If you have printed out yours on lavatory paper (assuming you've printed it out at all), in minuscule type, without spell-checking or proof reading it, then your tutor will probably assume that as little thought has gone into what it has to say as into its presentation. Because student numbers have exploded in recent years, tutors no longer have time (or the inclination) to decipher tatty, badly presented essays. If you want yours to receive proper attention, make sure it has a well presented introduction and is easy to read. You will be repaid for your trouble with better marks. Your reader shouldn't have to think around several corners to arrive at the sense of your argument. Be absolutely clear in your own mind what you want to say. Then, and only then, work out the best way of saying it. Finally, check that what you've written reflects what you wanted to say. It sounds obvious, but how many of you actually do this?

One last thin, a natural prerequisite for the development of an effective introduction towards a formidable article is vocabulary (yes, I can hear your brain's language center cringe!), a rich collage of descriptive and analytical phrases can work wonders for you.
